Back in March, KOKORO Spirits won its second gold medal at the 2020 San Francisco Spirits Competition for our unique and innovative tequila. Our joyous moment became overshadowed by Mayor London Breed's announcement of the shelter in place orders in San Francisco. Celebrating our tequila's success seemed unimportant with the sudden uncertainty.
After setting up our stations to work from home, we watched the pandemic unfold and take over our daily lives and routines. The shelter in place soon expanded to Mexico, closing the international borders and presenting a setback to importing our tequila. Although the circumstances pointed to delaying our launch plans, the signs we came across spoke louder, telling us to push against all odds. The first serendipitous discovery came from a mindfulness practitioner, who explained that the hand-drawn X's on our bottle design is a rune symbol for *gebō or "gift," representing the ideas between giving, receiving, and learning to give responsibly. This expression completed KOKORO's mission to give back to the community and resurfaced our gift-giving beginnings.
Soon after, the market saw skyrocketing online alcohol sales, and it became clear that it would be a staple of social distancing. When the world cannot travel outside their home, we are more dedicated than ever to bringing you an authentic, traditional, and thoughtful experience. In turn, an eCommerce model was decided upon to bring KOKORO straight to your doorstep with American Spirits Exchange and online fulfillment partner, Speakeasy Company.
Surrounded by uplifting signs, we moved forward to our next mission: finding investors to help share our award-winning Tequila Plata with the world. We opened our doors to our Wefunder crowdfunding campaign to diversify and democratize our pool of investors and allow everyone the opportunity to be a part of a cool new spirits company. For as little as $100, almost anyone can join our community, cause, and passion.
